I grew up in the country outside of a small town in southern Minnesota. Nothing terribly exciting happened. My dad taught me how to take pictures, giving me my first camera in grade school. I won my first champion ribbon in photography at age 13. I started working during the summers on my parents’ flower farm at about the same time.
In high school I was the girl who was involved in every group possible (student government, National Honor Society, band, choir, school newspaper, peer ministry, volleyball, basketball, track), and held a part-time job as a swim instructor and lifeguard.
In college, I followed the same path. I tutored students in the writing center, played in the orchestra, band and liturgical ensemble, wrote for the campus paper, volunteered on numerous committees, was a member of the honors program. I earned the award for the best senior honors project and my final grade point average put me at magna cum laude status.
After I graduated I started working as a reporter for a small paper near my hometown. A year later I took a job at a bigger paper in southern Florida. Then I moved to Costa Rica to teach English and improve my Spanish. After two years of working at a university I applied to graduate school and now I’m here studying at the University of Oregon.
